Hadoop at UNC Charlotte!

Research Computing has a 48-core Hadoop cluster (1 NameNode, 6 Slaves) available for use by faculty and graduate student researchers. Our Hadoop cluster also has a 10.75TB Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS).

Application Updates for Fall 2009

LS-DYNA License Upgrade

On Monday, Sept 29th, from 12 noon until 1 pm LS-Dyna will be unavailable so that we can install the new license key.  This action is required every September when the software license renews.  In the past we have been able to simply wait for a time when no LS-Dyna jobs were running and then install the license without impacting users, but this year the cluster has been so busy that this has not been possible.  So we must schedule this specific time to perform the installation. read more »

Matlab R2008a available!

As of the writing of this article, our current Matlab version (i.e., in the path) is (R2007a). I’ve installed the latest version, (R2008a), and its available to all URC cluster users for testing! read more »

Choosing a Compiler Suite

gcc/g++/gfortran is the default compiler suite on the cluster. You probably already know that we have the Intel compiler suite, as well as the Portland Group Inc. (PGI) compilers. They are in the path, so you can use icc, pgcc, ifort, pgf90, etc., but sometimes a software package’s configure needs more of a hint as to which compiler suite you would like to build with. read more »
