URC Cluster Outage

Posted on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 5:08 pm

URC Cluster Users:

On Wednesday, May 30th, Facilities Management will begin installation of a new backup chiller in the Bioinformatics building. In order to complete this work, the primary building cooling will be taken off line for three days (May 30th through June 1st). As a result, all of the URC resources in the Bioinformatics building, must be shut down for the duration of this work. read more »

HPC Cluster Outage

Posted on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 4:54 pm

URC Cluster Users:

We have finally scheduled the much needed cooling upgrade for our server room in the Bioinformatics building.  This upgrade will allow us to turn on the remaining portion of the new NIH-funded cluster, Cobra, return the Hadoop cluster to operation, and finish the implementation of a new GPGPU cluster, Python.

Unfortunately, the installation of this additional cooling will cause some disruption of our operations during the next two weeks while the contractors establish new connections to the building chilled water system.  The current schedule of outages is as follows:

  • Viper will be down beginning at 7am on Monday, March 7th and should return to service by noon on Tuesday, March 8th.
  • Cobra will be down beginning at 7am on Friday, March 4th and should return to service by the end of the day on Wednesday, March 9th.
  • MEES and MEES10 will be unaffected since they are located in the Atkins Building.

Just FYI, the Cobra cluster requires a much longer downtime since it is physically blocking the installation of one of the new InRow coolers.  So we must take it down early to make room for the work to proceed, and we must condense the equipment from 3 computing racks down to 2 before bringing it back up.

All running jobs will be terminated prior to shutdown of each cluster, so please plan your work so that your jobs finish prior to the outage or can be restarted after the equipment is back online.

Finally, the schedule above is based on estimates from the contractors who will perform the work.  There is the possibility that unforeseen problems will be encountered that alter this schedule. In that event, I will send an updated scheduled as early as possible.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Power Outage to Impact VIPER Cluster

Posted on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Facilities Management (working with Duke Power) has scheduled a campus-wide power outage for Friday, August 6th, beginning at 10pm and continuing until Saturday morning at 8am.   Since this event will disrupt cooling to the Bioinformatics server room, the Viper cluster will be impacted. We plan to shutdown the Viper cluster at 4pm on Friday afternoon, and hope to return the cluster to production before noon on Saturday.   All running jobs will be stopped immediately prior to shutdown, so please plan to complete your runs prior to 4pm Friday or plan to restart them after the power outage has been completed.

This outage should not directly impact the Mechanical Engineering clusters or the Research Data Services (RDS) pilot project since these systems are located in the Atkins server room; however, access to these services may be limited or intermittent.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Our New Cluster: “VIPER”

Posted on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 12:07 pm

viperWe are putting the finishing touches on our latest cluster: “VIPER”. We are excited about getting users up-and-running on it, which should be within the next couple of weeks. Here is some information about VIPER, so that you can familiarize yourself with this new computing resource. read more »

Power Outage to impact ChargerNet Cluster

Posted on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 1:18 pm

ChargerNet Users:

Due to the failure of a system board in the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), there will be a planned power outage for the campus server room on the weekend of November 15th.  As a result, we will have to shut down the ChargerNet Cluster and any jobs that are running at the time of the shutdown will be lost.   We plan to begin the shut down at 5pm on Friday, Nov. 13th, and return the cluster to production no later than 8am on Monday the 16th.   Please try to plan your work so that your jobs will complete prior to the shutdown (or can be restarted following the outage).

We apologize for the inconvenience,

Chuck

ChargerNet Users:
We are planning a  URC Webserver/Portal outage for Tuesday, September 8, 2009 from 7am until 8am.   We will use this outage to upgrade the webserver to Redhat EL 5.3.   The following websites will be unavailable for the duration of the upgrade:
The URC Website:

Update on Transition to Torque/Maui

Posted on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 9:18 am

ChargerNet Cluster Users:

This is a reminder that we are transitioning away from the Condor Job Scheduler to the Torque/Maui Scheduling system.  We have been running both systems for most of the summer in order to allow sufficient time for you to learn the new commands and update your submission scripts and procedures.  We have now moved most of our compute nodes into Torque/Maui and we plan to complete the transition and retire Condor on September 15th.

If you have not already done so, please begin submitting your cluster jobs using the new system as described on our web pages at http://urc.uncc.edu/faqs/job-scheduling-with-torque/.  We have provided example scripts for our most popular applications (see folder /apps/torque/examples on the cluster).  The URC staff is also available to assist you with the transition if needed – simply send an email request to URCSupport@uncc.edu.

Application Updates for Fall 2009

Posted on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 3:30 pm

There are several application changes that we will make prior to the start of the Fall 2009 Semester. In conjunction with the updates, we will be retiring old versions of the software. I’ve compiled a list of “new” application versions, as well as a list of the versions that will be retired: read more »

Transition to Torque/Maui

Posted on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 10:04 am

ChargerNet Users:

We are beginning to transition from the Condor Job Scheduler that we have used in the cluster since its inception in 2005 to the Torque/Maui Scheduling system which has become the predominate scheduler for academic HPC environments.  This change will allow us to take better advantage of tools and techniques developed at other universities, provide better integration with commercial products which support Torque/Maui for parallel processing (like MatLab), and improve our queue management by implementing resource limits or “fair share” algorithms. read more »
