Software updates to take HPC environment offline March 4

Wednesday, February 12, 2020
The process will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, and should take less than 8 hours.

At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, the Networking team will install software security updates to the HPC environment. The spring break updates will require an outage in the HPC cluster environment expected to take 8 hours or less. During the updates, all URC clusters—Copperhead, Sidewinder, Taipan, Steelhead, Hammerhead, and Titan—will be unavailable. Full functionality to the HPC environment should resume by 5 p.m. URC Support will notify HPC cluster users when clusters are back online.

To plan for this outage, Information Technology Services advised more than 500 HPC cluster users against submitting new jobs with time wall requests that extend past 8 a.m. on March 4, as the batch scheduler will not run jobs overlapping the outage date. An upgrade to the job scheduling software will require users to resubmit jobs that will not get scheduled before the outage, after March 4.
